Holistically Saving Ourselves!
2019 CHURCH THEME | CONNECT: CHURCH, COMMUNITY AND CULTURE
Reformation is in the air. From the existential cries of young black and brown people asking whether their lives really matter to the pleas of women demanding their rightful seat at the table; the Church must have a word of reconciliation to a community and culture reeling from exhaustion over a worn out and overdrafted prosperity gospel that has left our people nearly bankrupt.
In Matthew 18, Jesus is saying that whenever the church is pursuing and is involved in a reconciliation process we can rest assured that God’s blessing is with us in our efforts. In other words, as the church reclaims it prophetic voice on matters of right and wrong that are based on the real truth of God’s Word, we should be confident that we are doing the right thing and that Christ himself is right there with us.
With this assurance, the Church has no choice but to join the movement of liberation on the side of the poor, fighting against the structures of injustice, and building a beloved community. Faith is not only an affirmation that we utter in Sunday worship and at other church gatherings. Faith is a commitment. Faith is a deeply felt experience of being called by the Spirit of Christ to bear witness to God's coming liberation by fighting for the freedom now.
To be sure, the opposition is powerful. However, Matthew 18:20 affirms that the same power that worked within Jesus works, walks and witnesses with us! Therefore, we empowered to bear witness to call of freedom for our community. Then and only then will the people be able to love God with the minds, bodies and spirits.
In this knowledge, we seek through ministry to address the various crisis that confront our community and this culture knowing we can do all things through Jesus Christ!
