Study

“Indeed our survival and liberation depend upon our recognition of the truth when it is spoken and lived by the people. If we cannot recognize the truth, then it cannot liberate us from untruth. To know the truth is to appropriate it, for it is not mainly reflection and theory. Truth is divine action entering our lives and creating the human action of liberation.” -- James H. Cone

What makes a great Love Song?  Do you have a favorite? In this DEVOTIONS, Pastor Johnson shares from Love from the most requested scripture for weddings and vow renewals and how the same things that make for a great love song make this text so enduring.

While explaining the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the apostle Paul wrote extensively on the virtue of love (1 Corinthians 13). He contrasted rote acts of service with those overflowing from a loving heart. Powerful speaking is good, Paul wrote, but without love it’s like meaningless noise (v. 1). “If I . . . give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing” (v. 3). Paul ultimately said, “the greatest [gift] is love” (v. 13).

French philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin once said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

Christians believe that there is a supernatural realm and that human beings are spiritual beings. Therefore, many people conclude that human beings are capable of supernatural experiences. However, should human beings seek these types of experiences? If yes, how important are those types of spiritual experiences?
